Why You Should Text Your Friends Out of the Blue

On Christmas day, we tend to run down our list of close friends and family to wish them a merry Christmas.

A lot of us choose this day to reach out because it’s common in our culture, and therefore we can do it with minimal vulnerability.

However, your kind words will go a lot further if you send them to your people out of the blue any time of year besides Christmas.  Your message will resonate deeper in their hearts because you went out of your way instead of just going through the motions on a day when you don’t have work.

So text your friend on a random day in February ‘Hey buddy, been thinkin’ about you.  Hope you’re doing good.  How’s everything goin?’  In small ways like this, we can step outside of unconscious cultural conformity and find mindful opportunities to connect more intentionally instead of defaulting to cultural traditions that seem perfectly rational and kind but above all else are carried out because they’re easy and low vulnerability.   By interrogating little habits like these and weighing if they’re more vulnerable than the alternatives we hadn’t considered, we bring our hearts a little closer together.
